Your Spine and Digestive Organs
Current research indicates a link between the spine and the internal organs. The early osteopaths over 100 years ago believed this was because of their connection via the nervous system. They aimed to restore normal spine function in order to treat internal organs.
The organs that make up the gastrointestinal tract including the stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, small and large intestine work together to perform the complex task of digestion. These organs receive their nerve supply from the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) housed within the spinal column (see diagram).
The ANS controls the blood supply to the organs, regulates their activities and stimulates the intestinal wall to move food along the gut.
Symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, gas, acid reflux, constipation, stomach pain and diarrhea are often related to dysfunction within the digestive tract, linking back to the spinal problems.
The team at Everything’s Connected appreciates that digestive problems, as common as they are, are not normal and do not have to be endured.
