Colon Detox: how can it benefit you?

Colon detoxification involves expelling toxins from your system and it has two immediate benefits. Firstly, it removes the toxins quickly so damage can be minimized while they are in your system, and secondly, to remove old build-up that still lingers in your system. When the normal digestive process fails to break down the food you eat and pass it along the intestinal tract - like it is supposed to do - a harmful build-up of heavy foods and toxins occurs.

In the modern age, we probably eat the worst diet in the entire history of mankind. Between preservatives, processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup, chemical flavourings and dyes and white flour, the human body simply wasn't designed to process and remove these toxins. As a result we do a very poor job of processing them and these toxins can actually build up in the digestive system without ever being expelled. Combine that with natural products that are already difficult to digest, such as cholesterol and heavy fats and you have a crusty build-up of toxins and junk clouding up your digestive system.

Some of the benefits of colon detox include:

  • Healthier skin, teeth and nails.
  • Better digestion of nutrients from the foods you eat, meaning less vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
  • Improved kidney function.
  • Reduced risk of contracting numerous diseases, including some life threatening conditions such as cancer and heart disease.
  • A general feeling of wellbeing.

With the toxicity of the average human body at an all-time high, it is important to remember that while good colon detox practices can help contribute to your health, no amount of detoxification, no matter how extreme, can make your completely healthy alone. To live an entirely healthy life, you need to stop feeding your body these toxins in the first place! The entire reason you even have a build-up of toxins is because they entered your body though your mouth. Eating an organic diet removes pesticides and poisons from your intake, avoiding refined sugars and substituting whole grains in the place of white flour helps eliminate build-up from those as well. If at all possible, avoid prepared foods, especially TV dinners and other frozen meals.

Of course, the worst things you could possibly consume are tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, and many types of drugs - both over the counter and prescription. That's right, for a low toxin diet, it is wise to avoid your daily coffee! Drinking tea in its place is a great way to get a serving of antioxidants and a lesser dose of caffeine that is safe and will still help you wake up.

After any detox it is a great idea to replenish your body. Taking probiotic pills will help rebuild the "good bacteria" in your system. Most yogurts contain live and active cultures, which are another great way to restore your body's natural levels of helpful digestive bacteria.

It's also important to remember that while a colon detox is very good for the body, too much of a good thing is never good, so you should practice it in moderation. Detoxing too often can actually deplete your body of necessary nutrients, and cause more harm than good.
